Bahasa Indonesia Words With Dual Meaning: "Tahu"

Welcome to the first episode of our new series!

Just like in any other language, there are many words in Bahasa Indonesia that can be used to mean many different things. Some words, however, can mean very different things despite being spelt and pronounced

the same way.

To help you avoid confusing these different meanings of the same word, over the next several weeks we will share with you many Bahasa Indonesia words with dual meanings. We hope to be able to expand your vocabulary and help you enrich your knowledge in Bahasa Indonesia!

Today’s word is “Tahu.”

“Aku tidak tahu kalau kamu suka makan tahu.

“I didn’t know that you liked to eat tofu.

Did you catch the two meanings?

That's right! The word tahu can be used to mean both “to know” and “tofu.”

These two words are spelt the exact same way but have a small difference in pronunciation.

The word tahu meaning “tofu” has a more clear and strong “H” sound than the word tahu meaning “to know.”

In order to hear this difference in pronunciation, check out this video!

Selamat berlatih!
